Is Roger Wheeler Cheating on Animal Welfare Promises at Stop & Shop?

Roger Wheeler is the president of Stop & Shop, a subsidiary of corporate grocery giant Ahold Delhaize. Roger and Ahold Delhaize have been cheating on the company’s promises to uphold animal welfare standards. Despite making a public commitment nearly a decade ago to eliminate the sale of eggs from caged hens, Stop & Shop is only 100% cage-free in states where it’s legally required, such as its headquarters state of Massachusetts. Under Roger’s leadership, Stop & Shop continues to sell eggs that come from extremely cruel, dirty, and inhumane conditions in states where it’s not illegal to do so.

Eggs from battery cages are associated with some of the most severe forms of animal cruelty. This archaic caging confines birds to tiny, filthy enclosures where they cannot even walk around or properly nest. The wire flooring causes painful foot injuries, and the lack of space leads to physical and psychological distress, as the birds are unable to engage in normal behaviors.

As Roger enjoys his over 4,000 square foot home valued at nearly 1.8 million dollars, hens are continuing to suffer in small, metal cages where they can’t even spread their wings—all because he refuses to make good on a promise his company made nearly a decade ago.

Is Roger more interested in funding his lavish lifestyle than honoring crucial animal welfare commitments?

The time has come for Roger to finally stop cheating on his commitments and fulfill Stop & Shop’s animal welfare promise of selling 100% cage-free eggs.

Ahold Delhaize—the parent company of grocery stores such as Stop & Shop, Food Lion, Giant Food, and The Giant Company—promised consumers it would end the very worst abuses of hens in its supply chains. However, this greedy corporation still has not fulfilled its sustainability goal. Consumers are rightfully outraged. They are demanding that Ahold Delhaize take its commitment seriously and follow through on its promise to stop supporting the inhumane caging of animals.

As consumers—and Ahold Delhaize’s own leaders, including Roger Wheeler—know, making a promise is not the same as making good on a promise.

True leadership means doing the right thing everywhere, not just where the law requires it. That’s why we’re calling on Roger to ensure Stop & Shop goes 100% cage-free across all its stores, and why we’re bringing our message to Stop & Shop’s headquarters city.

When will Roger Wheeler finally stop cheating on Stop & Shop’s animal welfare policies and fulfill the company’s cage-free promise?
